TriAthlete

A triathlete competes in three different sports, cycling, swimming and racing. Each particular aspect of the triathlon race requires specific training and a strong competitive edge. Triathletes swim for 1500 meters, bike for 40 kilometers and run for 10 kilometers to complete their race. Men and women complete separately and complete both against others in the race as well as against already established records for the sport.
While a triathlete does not hold a job, the training is a full time commitment. Most triathletes have sponsors that are corporations or businesses that allow the athlete to train for competitions without having to hold a full time work position as well. Triathletes travel around the world to complete in events and move up through the ranks to eventually obtain a sufficient standing to make a national or Olympic caliber team. At this level they compete against other highly trained and skilled athletes for medals and recognition for their country or sponsors.
Being a triathlete takes a tremendous about of physical strength and stamina as well as a dedication that few have. The athlete must follow strict lifestyle choices as well as train on an ongoing basis in all types of weather and conditions. They must train in all three disciplines, swimming, cycling and running and may train for several months, at least six to eight hours a day to prepare for a competition. Triathletes usually work with one coach for each part of the competition but some coaches train athletes for all three events.
Common work activities include:
- Training for cycling, swimming and running on a daily basis. This includes weight training, cardio and endurance exercises.
- Meeting with coaches, organizers, sponsors and other people as required to plan training events and to plan for competitions.
- Attending promotional events or sponsor activities as required by contractual agreements.
- Traveling to competitions and training facilities as required.
- Following strict diet and lifestyle requirements as outlined by coaches and trainers.
- Speaking to various groups including schools and athletic organizations to promote the sport and to encourage children to stay healthy and involved in athletic events.
