Farm Equipment and Chemicals Representative
A farm equipment and chemicals representative works to promote or sell a specific product or item to farmers and other agricultural businesses within a specific geographic location or territory. The farm equipment and chemicals representative must be able to effectively communicate with farmers and others in the agricultural industry to help them understand the benefits of purchasing the specific product or item that they are representing. Many farm equipment and chemicals representatives sell a range of products and must be familiar with all aspects of what they are marketing to be able to effectively answer questions and promote the product.
Since so much of the job of a farm equipment and chemicals representative is communication, excellent verbal and written skills are required. In addition a farm equipment and chemicals representative will be required to travel and often will put in long hours at agricultural trade shows or other exhibits. The farm equipment and chemicals representative must be aware and knowledgeable on current trends within the agricultural sector and how the product or products they are marketing will support new technology and advancements.
A farm equipment and chemicals representative should have a good understanding of basic farming principles. Most professionals in this field have a farming, ranching or agricultural background as well as education and work experience in a related field. Some farm equipment and chemicals representatives work as farmers or agriculturalists themselves and work within a very small territory whereas others may have a very large geographic area.
Common work activities include:
- Meeting with farmers, agriculturalists and others within the territory and finding new customers or clients to market the product to. Expanding the customer base of the company through effective networking and interacting with others in the field.
- Tracking, recording and monitoring sales, ensuring delivery of the product and dealing with customer questions, concerns or complaints. Managing all aspects of the sale of the product and following up to ensure satisfaction.
- Attending local, national or even international conferences and workshops that are related to increasing knowledge on farming or agricultural products or product development.
- Meeting all company requirements with regards to sales totals, quotas or other requirements of the company. This usually means attending weekly or monthly meetings at a central location while working within the assigned territory for the rest of the time period.
- Traveling is always an aspect of the job for farm equipment and chemicals representatives. The ability to be self-motivated and self-managing is a very important aspect of this career.
