Irrigation Systems Designer

An irrigation systems designer may design irrigation systems for huge farms or they can work exclusively with homeowners to design customized lawn care systems. An irrigation systems designer works both indoors and outdoors to measure, study and evaluate the terrain and then plan the appropriate type of in-ground or above ground sprinkler or irrigation system. After completing the outdoor evaluation the irrigation systems designer uses computer programs such as CAD(computer assisted drafting) to plan the best system.

The irrigation systems designer must consider all aspects of the landscape either for agricultural irrigation or yard irrigation. Low areas, high areas and irregularities in the topography of the area must be considered both in the planning and the installation of the system. Understanding the basic water requirements for lawns, flowerbeds or agricultural crops is also a must for an irrigation systems designer.

The irrigation systems designer will provide both cost analysis information as well as product information to the consumer. He or she will very often oversee the installation of the irrigation system as well as troubleshoot and problem solve any issues that may arise during the installation or use of the system.

Common work activities include:

  • Understanding, designing and developing the most effective irrigation system for the area to be watered.
  • Enhancing current topographical features to improve both soil and water conservation in the area to be irrigated. This is often done by reading topo maps and studying aerial photographs, especially for agricultural irrigation systems.
  • Educating consumers about the various types of irrigation systems including sprinklers and drip systems and how they will impact water and soil conservation.
  • Formulating and designing cost analysis information for consumers based on the various types of systems that could be installed.
  • Troubleshooting issues that arise during the installation or the use of the irrigation system.
  • Using various computer programs and software to develop plans and detailed blueprints for the installation of the irrigation system.
