Veterinarian

A veterinarian treats and cares for all types of animals, birds, and even reptiles. Veterinarians often specialize in the treatment and care of one category of animal such as small or large animals, reptiles, birds, zoo animals or even animals in the wild. Since different types of animals require different care, specialization is important for effective treatment and diagnosis.

Veterinarians complete routine vaccinations and examinations, emergency care, and surgical procedures on animals. The vet must rely on the owners report as well as the physical conditions of the animal since there is no way to directly communicate with the patient. Veterinarians are able to look for known physical symptoms to help with diagnosis as well as complex lab tests to help pinpoint genetic or disease conditions.

Most vets work in private clinics or animal hospitals but some work for government agencies, zoos, research facilities or even pharmaceutical companies. A great majority of vets specialize in small animal practice that is generally the treatment of pets. Some vets also specialize in large animal or livestock practices that treat cows, sheep, swine and horses. Often large and small animal veterinarians work exclusively from a clinic but some will make house calls, especially in the case of large animal practices.

Common work activities include:

  • Vaccinating, examining, diagnosing and treating the various animals that come into the clinic or animal hospital.
  • Operating on and establishing post-operative care for pets requiring surgical procedures.
  • Educating pet owners about proper care for their pets including correct feeding, vaccinations, health concerns, behaviors, breeding and even specific information about exercise or modifying the pet's diet.
  • Evaluating and determining the best course of treatment for animals with terminal diseases and those that are aging. This may include euthanizing pets and animals when needed.
  • Communicating information to the pet owner regarding treatment options, cost of treatment and prognosis for recovery.
  • Responding to emergency situations as needed and treating animals in the most humane manner.
