Wetlands Biologist
A wetlands biologist is a specialist in understanding, monitoring and supporting the environment that animals and plants found within wetlands need to survive. A wetlands biologist may specialize in animals, plants, reptiles or fish that exist within a specific type of wetland or he or she may be a generalist, studying how the various ecosystems within the wetlands interact. A wetlands biologist may also work within a zoo, park, reserve or a private or governmental research facility to study and record the impact the industry and people have on the animals and plants found within a wetland ecosystem.
Many wetlands biologists provide consulting services to industries and government departments and make recommendations on policies and usage of various wetlands areas. They are also responsible for being the watchdogs for the wetlands environment and work to educate various groups about the importance of the wetland areas. A wetlands biologist often provides education to children and interested groups and may facilitate tours and educational seminars within the wetlands area.
Wetlands biologists work directly to support the wetlands by designing and implementing conservatorship programs for the areas. They work closely with other biologists, land managers, governmental agencies and park and reserve managers to ensure the continued growth and existence of wetland species both within and outside of protected areas. Some wetlands biologists may work directly with endangered species to provide breeding areas and even monitor numbers to help with programs to save the species.
Common work activities include:
- Recording, tracking and identifying various species of animals, plants, reptiles and even insects within a given wetlands area.
- Recommending policy changes or modifications to protect and enhance current wetlands areas or even develop new protected or monitored areas.
- Reporting regular environmental conditions such as water levels, weather conditions or migrations of various birds or animals through the wetlands area.
- Educating the public on the importance of wetlands by providing tours, groups and other educational activities for adults and children.
- Entering information on databases, logs or other tracking devices as required.
