Zoologist, Animal Care Specialist
A zoologist is an animal care specialist that works directly with animals in captivity. Similar to a zookeeper, the zoologist is often involved in the feeding, cleaning and care of the animals on a daily basis. In addition however the zoologist may have more direct interactions with the animals during breeding, birth, treatment of sick animals, and determining the correct diet to feed the specific species. Most zoologists have formal training in zoology or a related field.
A zoologist tracks and records the various behaviors of the animals in his or her care. The zoologist or animal care specialist is not just concerned with the animal's physical health but also with their mental health. Many animals in captivity become bored and engage in harmful behaviors, so zoologists work to create diversions and activities for the animals to keep them alert and mentally healthy. This may include providing toys or other stimulation for the animal that is similar to what they may encounter in their natural environment. The animal care specialist also recommends modifications to the enclosures to make them as natural as possible for the animal.
The zoologist has the difficult job of working with the veterinarians when treatment is required for the wild animals. He or she will be directly involved in the restraint and examination of the animal, as well as administering treatments as prescribed by the veterinarian. Keeping accurate records is very important for the zoologist, especially if they zoo is involved in a breeding program. The zoologist or animal care specialist will be required to track estrus cycles and recommend optimum breeding times to ensure pregnancy.
Common work activities include:
