Automotive Repairer

Automotive Repairer

An automotive repairer is extremely important to anyone that owns a motor vehicle and has had it break down. An automotive mechanic or service technician needs the knowledge and ability to diagnose, accurately and quickly, any mechanical problems and then repair the vehicle. Because of the complex computers and integrated electronic system that measure performance and run vehicles today, an automotive repairer must continually increase their knowledge and have the ability to understand complex, computer-based, diagnostic equipment.

Automotive repairers are highly trained and they use their skills to inspect and repair vehicles. Unlike years ago when most vehicles ran on gasoline, now they can also run on ethanol, electricity and other fuels. Along with computers and other equipment, an automotive repairer also uses a large variety of power tools such as grinding machines, pneumatic wrenches, hoists, welding equipment and many common hand tools. Trained automotive technicians understand diagnostic testing readouts and compare them with the manufacturer's benchmarked standards, so they know in what area the vehicle needs attention.

Most automotive repairers work forty or more hours weekly. They are often required to work evenings or weekends, depending on the customers needs. An automotive technician needs to be in good physical shape, as they are often lift heavy tools or automotive parts, stand or work in awkward positions and spend most of their time on their feet. Some automotive repairers work for automotive dealers while others work in independent repair shops. There is always a demand for experienced automotive repairers, so their job outlook is very favorable.

Common work activities include:

  • Examining automobiles that have been brought in for service or repair.
  • Evaluating the motor or vehicle and determining what may be the problem by completing diagnostic test including computer tests.
  • Consulting with customers, developing repair cost estimates and making adjustments as requested by the customer.
  • Completing vehicle repairs.
  • Meeting with supplies, salespeople and vendors to ensure basic repair parts are always in inventory.
  • Handling customer complaints, questions and prioritizing repairs based on availability of parts.
