A debugging consultant specializing in surveillance countermeasures works with companies to make sure that they buildings, offices, homes and other spaces are free from any type of listening or surveillance device that may be used to monitor conversations. While this may seem very abstract to most people there is actually a huge market for confidential material as it pertains to discovering company products, new markets or even new technologies before they are released to the market. In many businesses, especially the technology and pharmaceutical fields, finding out what the competition is working on can be a multimillion dollar operation every year. It is therefore important for most of these corporations to have the security to know that their offices are not bugged or there is no surveillance on their work or residential area.

A debugging consultant usually has a lengthy history in security or security technologies through a state, federal or international law enforcement agency. The consultant is knowledgeable about current surveillance technology and how to detect it through the use of radio frequency tracking devices, specialized highly sensitive electronic scramblers and even the use of specialized sensing equipment. Understanding where and what to look for is a large part of being an effective debugger consultant.

heat The debugging consultant completes a physical examination of the various rooms or areas, monitors these areas on a scheduled basis, and removes any type or surveillance equipment found. He or she may assist in tracking the surveillance equipment back to the owner if possible. The work of a debugging consultant is usually very private with most advertising done on a one-on-one basis since large companies do not want to draw attention to any concerns they may have regarding security.

Common work activities include:

  • Researching the latest technologies used in covert surveillance and counter surveillance.
  • Attending exhibitions, trade fairs and technology seminar to keep on top of new products on the market that could be used in surveillance or bugging.
  • Meeting with clients to discuss their needs with regards to debugging consulting.
