Cosmetologist

A cosmetologist is educated to provide hair care, skin care, nail care and other services to enhance their client's appearance. To work professionally as a cosmetologist specialist requires certification, as they require a license to practice cosmetology. There are cosmetology schools and private or public vocational schools that have cosmetology programs which usually offer either day or evening classes. The length of the certification course varies but generally lasts from one to two years. Others become cosmetologists by completing an apprenticeship program, proving their skills and passing a written test.
Cosmetologists care for their client's beauty needs but also often act as a consultant to many clients when requested. They give their professional opinions and suggestions regarding skincare options, cosmetic application, colors and flattering hairstyles that would best suit the customer. Cosmetologists with advanced skills and training may offer therapeutic massages and treatments, advice on hygienic practices, nail care, skin care and hair care, between salon visits.

Others specialize in the treatment of nails, where they treat cuticles, polish toenails and fingernails, apply hardeners or conditioners and apply artificial nails. In small salons, cosmetologists often answer the phones, keep records, book appointments or even order the necessary products.
