Religion - Church Minister

A church minister prepares and leads their congregation, which are parishioners who believe in a common faith and routinely attend a given church, in services of worship. They preach sermons that are appropriate to their churches needs but should also help welcome and attract new members. Church ministers devote a great deal of time studying, preparing and preaching biblically based sermons. Many teach bible classes or studies, mentor youth groups and lead workshop services. They counsel the bereaved, conduct funeral services and perform spiritual counseling. Church ministers may provide pre-marriage counseling, along with performing the actual wedding ceremony. When parishioners are experiencing problems, a church minister performs family and marriage counseling when requested.
Church ministers visit their parishioners in their homes, visit the elderly in nursing homes, people in hospitals and often called out at any hour for emergencies. They write newsletters or articles, work in administration, plan activities for church members, do administration work and use computers, business machines and telephones. A church minister may supervise or work with volunteers that do church maintenance, provide food and clothing for the needy or plan a church picnic.
The education requirements of a church minister depends on their denomination, as some accept training from liberal arts schools or bible schools, while others require study and a bachelor's degree from a theological seminary. Some denominations need no formal educational requirements to become a church minister. Becoming a church minister is a calling from God, and not a career that a person selects.
Common work activities include:
- Provide counseling and emotional and spiritual support for parishoners and community members in time of crisis and personal emergencies.
- Provide financial aid and assistance in the community in times of disaster or loss of income to church members and others in the community.
- Teach the word of God in church services as schedule in accordance to religious beliefs.
- Research and constantly attend trainings, retreats and seminars to improve their knowledge of the scripture and its teachings.
- Visiting with church members, people in the community and those that are not able to attend church services.
- Performing marriages, christenings, baptisms, funerals and other religious ceremonies as requested.
- Overseeing the care and maintenance of the church building and property, meeting with the governing body of the church and supporting church projects.
