Airlines - Flight Attendant

All the major airlines must provide flight attendants to ensure the safety of their public passengers. A flight attendants primary job is to make sure that everyone follows all the necessary safety rules and regulations, as safety is their number one concern. They are also responsible for making the passengers as comfortable as possible, so they have a pleasant, uneventful and relaxing trip. If an emergency occurs during flight or upon landing, helping the passenger or passengers is their most important responsibility.

Before each flight, the captain briefs the flight attendants on expected weather conditions, flight plans, specific passenger's needs and other issues. It is the job of a flight attendant to explain the emergency equipment to passengers, check seatbelts and make sure their carry-on luggage is stowed properly. During the flight, they answer questions, reassure passengers, and direct them during emergencies. Their in-flight job often consists of serving refreshments, precooked meals, reading materials, blankets and pillows, snacks and other items necessary for the comfort of the passengers. They train flight attendants to administer first aid and help the disabled, elderly, small children and passengers needing assistance.

The majority of flight attendants work for large, commercial airlines. Their hours vary and they often spend a great deal of time away from home. Flight attendants must be reliable, hard working, flexible and good at dealing with the public. Sometimes their job requires them to relocate but as they gain seniority, flight attendants often get to choose their flights and elect to live in a specific place.

Common work activities include:

  • Completing safety checks and ensuring that all inventory and supplies for both first aid, emergencies and in-flight food and beverage service are on the plane prior to boarding passengers.
  • Assisting passengers to locate seats, confirming tickets, and monitoring any behavior of concern with boarding passengers.
  • Demonstrating the correct use of emergency and safety equipment on board the plan to the passengers prior to take-off.
  • Answering passenger questions, providing food and beverage service and calming or monitoring passengers that are upset or ill.
  • Ensuring maximum comfort of all on board including the pilot and other flight professionals.
  • Completing all in-flight documentation and other information as required.
