Warehouse Manager
Request more information about earning a degree to become a warehouse manager.
A warehouse manager directs, coordinates and plans the warehouse storage and distribution of the products and materials within a company. Others perform these activities for organizations that store products and goods for many different organizations. A warehouse manager supervises the activities of employees, engages in shipping, receiving, storing and testing materials and products. They are responsible for safety development, along with implementing security and safety programs. They issue job assignments and review work orders, invoices and confirm reports and monitor the distribution of materials or products.
The warehouse manager interviews people for warehouse and supervisory positions, ensuring they meet the service expectations, and then select, hire and train them. The manager fires employees that do not meet the necessary performance standards. Part of their job entails meeting with other department heads about sales, purchasing, production and record control, so the warehouse activities remain coordinated and running smoothly. They maintain safe and efficient warehouse conditions including overseeing the equipment and vehicle fleets and order any replacements or maintenance, when needed.
A warehouse manager spends part of his or her time scheduling the employees and delivery drivers, resolving staffing and personnel issues, budgeting and planning, to meet projected figures, supervising the warehouse employees and supervisors, and meeting with clients to determine their needs and requirements. A manager requires exception skills in communication, problem solving, decision-making, prioritizing work, organizing, computer skills and getting the necessary information from relevant sources. They should have good people skills, be pleasant and courteous and posses a great deal of patience when working under pressure.
Common work activities include:
- Supervising, training and hiring of employees to work in the warehouse either as laborers, equipment operators, clerks or inventory control personnel.
- Scheduling employees, truck drivers, arranging drop offs and deliveries and scheduling loading dock use of mechanized equipment such as forklifts.
- Ensuing that all appropriate safety regulations are being followed both with regards to personal safety and safety of inventory.
- Checking and verifying shipping records, handling questions or concerns of shipping shortages or overages and addressing any problems with inventory control.
- Meeting with new and existing clients to determine their needs for warehouse space, entering into storage contracts and entering information into various software programs to monitor use of the facility.
