Chess Instructor

A chess instructor may either work with individuals or groups to teach the basics of chess to people of all ages. Many chess instructors work with elementary, middle or even high schools to set up chess programs to teach kids how to play. Many community centers, adult learning classes and even groups hire chess instructors to teach adults how to play this challenging game. Individuals may also contact a chess instructor directly to get one-on-one training.
A chess instructor must be very self-motivated and able to communicate with others the need for chess lessons. Often a chess instructor is a proven chess champion or master and will have high ranking of 1800 or more within the chess tournament world. The higher the ranking the more advanced the chess instructor is. The chess instructor should be able to work with kids and adults of different ages and abilities to teach the game of chess, as well as help the learners understand the various strategies used in competitions.
A chess instructor may have an office or meeting space for students but often goes directly to schools or homes to teach the lessons. Some instructors organize local tournaments and chess events to spark interest in the game, whereas others develop and support local chess clubs and less formal games between chess players of all ages.
Common work activities include:
- Marketing and developing a customer base of individuals interested in learning chess and hiring a chess instructors.
- Meeting with schools, community agencies and groups to promote chess and to develop an interest in the game within the specific community.
- Completing group or individual chess lessons for private clients, groups, schools or other organizations.
- Planning and organizing local chess tournaments or events as well as promoting national and even international events to develop interest.
- Teaching chess skills at various venues such as summer camps, night schools, after school programs or as part of a school curriculum.
