Disc Jockey Service Owner

A disc jockey service owner has the job duties of booking gigs or events, scheduling and training DJ's, ensuring the correct music is available for parties and events, setting out play lists, meeting with customers and generally managing the day to day activities of the company. This usually includes a good knowledge of business administration as well as a complete knowledge of financial issues such as payroll, taxes, invoicing, accounts receivable as well as managing outside contractors.
A disc jockey service owner usually is the first person to meet with the individuals wanting to book a DJ service. He or she will discuss the various types of music offered, answer questions regarding the sound system that will be provided, as well as discuss logistics and other issues. For mobile DJ services the owner will need to get directions for the DJ to the location, as well as calculate any additional fees required for travel and set-up time.
A disc jockey service owner should be able to quickly resolve issues with both DJs and equipment to ensure that the service will be provided. He or she needs to have excellent organizational and communication skills as well as being able to work under pressure and within deadlines. Marketing, advertising and promotion of the disc jockey service may be handled by the owner or may be contract to an outside agency or handled by a management and promotion team in larger services.
Common work activities include:
- Networking and meeting with prospective clients in the community and creatively marketing the DJ service to new audiences and potential customers.
- Setting up lighting and sound equipment, playing music and requests, tearing down all equipment and packing equipment on a nightly basis.
- Budgeting, payroll, scheduling and working with DJs to ensure that a high quality sound and light show is provided.
- Training new DJs regarding the level of professionalism that is expected and the appropriate way to respond to requests, complaints or other issues during the event.
- Working for various organizations within promotional campaigns within the community.
- Responding to any invoicing, billing or quality of service issues by customers before, during or after the event.
- Meeting with new clients to develop music and play lists, types of music required, as well as getting as much information about the event as possible.
