In the film and video industry makeup artists play an important role in the overall appearance of the actors and actresses. Not only does a makeup artists strive to make each person on the big or little screen look as good as possible, but he or she may also be required to make them look older, younger, hurt or even actually alter some aspect of their physical appearance with makeup and masks or partial masks. The makeup artists works closely with the director and production team to create just the look that is required for the various parts of the movie, or even just for the healthy look that most actors and actresses wish to have during interviews and appearances. Since the studio lighting can add shadows and accentuate features, makeup artists use their skills to minimize the often negative affects of the harsh lighting.

Most makeup artists also work to enhance special effects as they related to the characters on films or in videos. Bruising, body injury and even some of the scary effects are created through the use of makeup and skillfully designed masks and prosthetics. Makeup artists must be creative and able to work with a wide variety of materials including plastics, rubber and other silicon to make the desired special effects happen.

A makeup artist must be able to work as part of a team. They may have to make adjustments to the characters appearance on short notice, may have to work incredibly long hours during filming, and also may have to be able to quickly improvise and creatively solve problems that develop on the set. Quick thinking, an understanding of the various uses of makeup and how they look when on film or video as well as good communication skills are important to a makeup artist.

Common work activities include:

  • Designing and developing new special effects through the use of makeup and other materials.
  • Creatively working with a team to turn the writer's concepts into the actual appearance of the character using the various supplies provided.
  • Applying makeup to the various actors and actresses as required by the script or director.
  • Working closely with actors or actresses to create the desired appearance and being able to give advice on the correct application to make the individual look their best.
  • Being flexible in work locations and hours and working extended hours when deadlines need to be reached.
  • Managing, ordering and inventory control of makeup supplies to ensure all required supplies are available at all times.
