Film and Video - Television Production Engineer

The television production engineer is responsible for the set-up and maintenance of the various types of audio and visual equipment used in the filming and production of TV shows, movies, videos and films. The television production engineer tests all equipment to ensure it is in good working condition prior to the filming and troubleshoots any possible issues that develop with the operation of the equipment during the filming.

The television production engineer works as part of the production team and is usually has seniority within the group. He or she is responsible in many cases for monitoring the sound and picture quality of the filming and for making adjustments to lighting and even microphone locations to maximize quality. The television production engineer may be directly responsible for only audio or video production if it is a large crew. In these cases the audio television production engineer will also mix and cut the audio, and the video television production engineer will do the same for the video.

The television production engineer may set up for live shows or may work on-sight or in a remote location on films and video production. This means that a television production engineer must be prepared to work in a variety of conditions, both good and bad. Television production engineers that work for news stations often go with reporters to set up for live reports and specials. An ability to work under pressure and to quickly solve problems and difficulties is important for a television production engineer.

Common work activities include:

  • Setting up, testing and ensuring the operation of all video and sound equipment used in the production or filming.
  • Maintenance and troubleshooting of problems with audio or video equipment on the set.
  • Contracting with outside services for repair or replacement of equipment as needed.
  • Working long hours during production and prior to the start of production to keep all equipment working correctly.
  • Coordinating networking and communication systems between the various crew members, directors and on and off-site personnel.
  • Working effectively with a team of production people to get a high quality video or audio recording completed within the time allotted.
