Musical Group Leader

A musical group leader has two distinct roles, one is as a musician and the other is as the business manager for the group. Since these roles are very diverse the musical group leader often works very long hours and manages most aspects of bookings, invoicing, bill collection as well as working with the group or band as a musician. Many musical group leaders also produce music for the group to play and may even work as the group's agent getting bookings and planning events.
The musical group leader often works with records, concert promoters, booking agents and even other musical groups to book events for the band. He or she is responsible for signing the contracts, making sure that the band members get paid as well as that everyone arrives at each event as required by the contract. In the cases where the band or group has a recording contract the musical group leader may also negotiate contracts or recording deals as well as actually perform on the record with the band.
Knowledge about the music business, business management, financial management and contractual issues as well as music in general is important for a musical group leader. Marketing and promoting the band, preparing advertising and media coverage, and keeping band members aware and happy with all decisions is a big part of the responsibility of a musical group leader. Good communication skills and a strong business sense is key for this career.
Common work activities include:
- Networking with musical agents, record labels, concert promoters and club and venue managers to book the band into various performances.
- Managing all financial aspects of the band including paying union dues, managing royalty payments, tracking investments or financial gains as well as making sound investments.
- Preparing payroll for band members, crew and other individuals working for the band.
- Resolving problems or conflicts that arise before the performance or concert.
- Working with others involved in the concert or promotion to make sure the show goes smoothly and with no problems.
- Dealing with concerns, questions or complaints from band members regarding almost any aspect of the performance, booking or travel.
