Museum Floor Manager
The job of a museum floor manager includes working with volunteers, coordinating staff, assisting visitors to the museum as well as providing or organization educational information and guided tours. The museum floor manager also contributes to changes in the museum and planning new exhibits and special events that may happen either on or off the museum property. Often the floor managers work closely with educators and other groups to provide "traveling" exhibits that bring small samples of displays to one venue or organization for educational purposes.
The floor manageroversees the day-to-day operation of his or her area of the museum. In very small museums there may be one floor manager for the whole collection whereas in large museums the floor manager may only be responsible for one display, area or floor. Contracting with outside vendors for repairs, ensuring that the area is clean and well cared for, coordinating and monitoring guided tours or even providing information to museum patrons are all part of the floor manager's responsibilities.
In some museums and with some displays the floor manager may also be directly responsible for managing the security of the area. Usually a floor manager will be on the premises during museum hours and will respond to any concerns or potentially problematic situations. A floor manager must have excellent communication and management skills as well as having an eye for details. The floor manager may make recommendations for improving the display area as well so need to be both creative and knowledgeable about the materials they are responsible for.
Common work activities include:
- Recruiting, organizing, training and supervising of volunteers and staff on the floor area.
- Developing and implementing educational programs throughout the museum.
- Overseeing the daily care and maintenance of the designated museum area.
- Making recommendations or suggestions for change in displays or special events designed to increase visitors to the exhibit or museum.
- Overseeing, assessing and supervising the security in the area of the museum they are responsible for.
- Answering questions, assisting visitors and providing information on the various displays as requested.
