Music Tutor

Music Tutor

A career as a music tutor is very rewarding for those that love to help others learn to play an instrument or to gain an appreciation for music in their lives. Most music tutors are accomplished musicians themselves and specialize in one or two different types of instruments. Some music tutors actually specialize in a particular style of music and its instruments such as woodwinds, percussion instruments, or even classic music and the instruments in one part of the orchestra.

Music tutors may either go to the student's home or may have their own studio that the student comes to for lessons and tutoring. Some music tutors provide the instruments whereas other have the students bring their own. Generally music tutors require the student to purchase their own music and additional supplies based on the tutor's recommendation. Music tutors may choose to work with a specific age group or may work with students from very young children to adults wanting to learn to play an instrument. Some music teachers may have formal training whereas others are just naturally gifted in both teaching and playing music.

A music teacher must be motivational, enthusiastic and passionate about his or her instrument. They must also have excellent communication skills and lots of patience to work with beginning students. Music teachers must also be able to help students of varying levels of expertise or should have others that they can refer students to as they become more advanced.

Common work activities include:

  • Traveling to student's houses or scheduling appointments for the students to come to the teachers house for lessons.
  • Invoicing, billing and collecting accounts receivable for lessons provided.
  • Advertising and marketing the music lessons and finding new clients to constantly expand and obtain a large customer base.
  • Learning and developing new techniques for effective teaching of the various aspects of the instrument.
  • Finding music and songs that appeal to all the students and customizing lessons based on student's musical abilities and interests.
