Photography - Photo Restorer
A photo restorer is responsible for helping restore and reproduce old, faded, damaged or partially destroyed photographs to their original condition or even to a more enhanced condition. This is done through the use of scanners, computer software programs, and artistic and creative talents of the photo restorer. Most photo restorers have formal training in photography plus may have a graphic design or art background. They are also usually very knowledgeable on historical issues and film development processes used at the time of the original photograph.
A photo restorer starts by examining the original photograph that has been damaged or become faded. He or she then scans the photograph into a computer and works with various programs to attempt to recreate the original image. This takes a creative flair as well as an ability to look at the original photograph and naturally extend the picture to include the damaged parts. Once the photograph is back to its original appearance on the screen a negative is then printed off the computer. The photo restorer then develops the negative as you would any other picture to provide a new original.
Photo restorers may be used to re-color or add color to original black and white photos as well as restoring old or damaged pictures. In very badly damaged photos the restorer may be required to do a bit of research to find out other photos or images from the specific time period or even from the same photography studio to help complete the image as accurately as possible. This amount of detail is usually not required in recreating faded or water damaged images, but can be very helpful to museums or historical collections.
Common work activities include:
- Receiving, scanning and creating new details to enhance or repair damaged photos.
- Producing new negatives and developing the film to create a new photograph from the damaged original.
- Mounting, framing or backing the photograph if requested by the customer.
- Invoicing and billing clients for services, making deposits to the bank and managing accounts payable.
- Ordering supplies, equipment and speciality items required for the business as required.
- Advertising and marketing the photo restoration services in various areas such as museums, collectors, private individuals and even businesses.
