Poets are very creative people that have an exceptional ability to use words to evoke emotions and to describe situations in unique and very meaningful ways. A poet must be able to capture even tiny nuances of life and to bring them to the attention of the reader. Most poets have some classical literature training in the form of a University or college degree in English, literature or another from of classical education. Some poets may also be musicians that set their poems to music in the form of lyrics.

A poet traditionally only became recognized through getting his or her poetry published through an agent or through a recognized publishing house. With the internet it is now possible for aspiring poets to publish their own work on the internet either through their own website or through one of the many poetry blogs or sites that are open to anyone. In addition there are other sites that offer publishing services where a poet can publish their own hard-copy version of a poetry book for a fraction of the price of what a traditional publisher would charge.

Some poets work for literary companies, advertising agencies or even greeting card manufacturers. Most poets simply write for the love of the language and do not necessarily consider the monetary aspect of the craft, rather they work to improve their expression and their ability to get others to experience the emotions that the poem it attempting to convey. Poets may also provide readings and may work with students and other interested people to learn the skills needed to create poetry.

Common work activities include:

  • Reading and studying published poets to enhance skills and learn new ways for expressing concepts and ideas.
  • Research and explore the various aspects of the topic of a poem to get new insight and ideas.
  • Teach poetry to others either through formal classes and training or by completing poetry readings.
  • Meet with literary agents, publishers and clients to market poems or to get ideas for new poems.
