Bank Examiner

Bank examiners work to monitor, assess and evaluate the performance of various banks and bank branches with regards to compliance to regulations and laws as well as bank policies and procedures. The bank examiner may report on the staff's ability to follow protocols as well as the condition of record keeping, the compliance with all regulations with regards to data entry or transaction recording as well as understanding of how to deal with overages or shortages in the bank. Bank examiners usually work on-site traveling to different branches as scheduled or as requested. Some work may also be done through remote access to electronic record keeping programs.
The bank examiner uses a variety of tools including personal inspection of the bank and computer access to complete the monitoring process. A good knowledge of financial management, banking procedures and protocols as well as accounting principles is required for a bank examiner. Most examiners have worked in management positions in banks and are very familiar with the day-to-day operation of the facilities.
A bank examiner will report his or her findings to the bank board of directors or management and will be required to provide evidence to substantiate the findings. This includes using various spreadsheets and accounting programs as well as word processing. Since the bank examiner will often discover incorrect procedures it is important that this information be addressed accurately and in as non-judgmental and objective fashion as possible. Excellent communication skills as well as a good eye for detail are critical to a bank examiner.
Common work activities include:
- Traveling to the various branches and locations of the bank either locally, within the state, or even nationally.
- Performing audits and examination of bank records, procedures and day-to-day activities and responsibilities of banking staff.
- Preparing reports both in written and oral form and presenting them to the managers, directors or boards that requested the audit or examination.
- Researching and keeping up-to-date on laws and regulations regarding banking and banking reform.
- Supervising other staff under the bank examiner that may complete specific aspects of the examination both on-site and from remote access locations using the internet or internal network.
