Banking Research Supervisor

Banking Research Supervisor

The research supervisor at a bank is in charge of making sure that all overages and shortages at various banks are reconciled, as well as making sure that request for information, clarification and policy information is provided when requested. These requests for information may come from federal agencies, monitoring groups, private individuals, affiliate banks or even other financial institutions. Often the research supervisor will see all incoming correspondence and requests for information and will delegate the research and response to someone else in the department that has working knowledge of the topic or law.

As the manager of the department the research supervisor works to hire, train and supervise staff in the research department of the bank. Often this means working very closely and mentoring new staff that may or may not have formal training in finance and business management. Many research supervisors also train staff on various databases and data entry programs that various banks and financial institutions use to help with information retrieval and reporting.

The research supervisory is usually responsible for gathering information and reporting to the Federal Reserve Bank as required. This can be ongoing standard reports or may be requests for specific information. The research supervisor may also provide information on banking and bank policies to foreign banks, financial institutes or private individuals that are considering opening up accounts or setting up specific investments using the bank. Excellent management, research and communication skills are needed for a research supervisor. An ability to work on many projects at one time and respond to a variety of requests in a timely manner is also important.

Common work activities include:

  • Correcting and reconciling variances in accounts between various banks and their institute.
  • Hiring, training and managing others in the department with regards to computer programs, spreadsheets, databases and other technology used.
  • Responding to requests for information regarding bank issues from various groups or individuals in a timely and accurate fashion.
  • Locating and summarizing bank policies and procedures to outside agencies if requested.
  • Preparing reports to the Federal Reserve Bank or other agencies as requested.
