Bookkeeper/Tax Preparer/Paralegal
The roll of a bookkeeper, tax preparer and paralegal is actually three separate jobs that are very closely related. A bookkeeper works to handle ledgers for companies including accounts receivable and payable, managing payroll, submitting forms and reports to required agencies, making deposits for the company and even paying bills and managing inventory funds. A bookkeeper may work from home or at an office or may go directly to the business as required.
The roll of a tax preparer works very well with the bookkeeper roll in that the individual has prior knowledge of the business and is able to prepare tax returns as required that are in the best interest of the business while fulfilling all state, local and federal tax requirements. A tax preparer must have basic tax knowledge and should be aware of appropriate deductions and sources of taxable income that the business is subject to.
A paralegal is able to complete basic legal forms including filings, some pleadings and even basic litigation issues. A paralegal will also be a notary as well and will be able to notarize documents for the business or company. A paralegal usually works in conjunction with an attorney but may also work independently in some matters, especially in civil issues. The three roles of a bookkeeper, tax preparer and paralegal provides most businesses with all of the financial and basic legal and tax assistance that they will require.
Common work activities include:
- Meeting with business owners, managers and private individuals to set up the services required.
- Completing accounting tasks such as ledgers, payrolls, deductions, basic legal pleadings or filing, preparing tax returns.
- Advising clients on appropriate financial or legal avenues to consider with regards to business or personal financial management.
- Completing forms, filing reports or preparing documents for clients, agencies or governments as required by law.
- Marketing and advertising services that are provided to constantly expand the customer base.
- Assisting with audits or financial reviews for companies or individuals as required.
