Employment Services - Career Program Coordinator

A career program coordinator is responsible for working with various clients that access a service to help them find employment or to network with various employment sources within the community. The coordinator is usually based within a social services agency or non-profit organization that works with a target population such as unemployed individuals, individuals looking for a first job, women or minorities or people with special needs that are trying to enter the workforce.
Career program coordinators provide direct services to the clients by helping them explore various job opportunities in the community, developing a resume, working in internships or apprenticeship programs, attending workshops or classes to enhance skill development, or in practicing for job interviews. Often the coordinator may assist the teachers or mentors in the program to understand what the clients are specifically requiring in the way of career education and specific skills. In large organizations the coordinator may not have as active a role in direct client services but may coordinate trainings and educational opportunities between various groups and agencies.
The career coordinator also fulfills a valuable networking function within the community. He or she works on an ongoing basis with various businesses, companies and agencies in the community to help clients of the training programs obtain work. This role requires involvement on civic committees and boards as well as an ability to communicate effectively with businesses to find out what they want in new employees.
Common work activities include:
- Coordinating the needs of the employers with services offered by the agency to train people in the community.
- Meeting with an assessing the needs of various clients to the agency and helping them choose the best career training or options.
- Liaison with businesses in the community to provide employment opportunities for individuals completing training.
- Participating in community based committees and service groups that assist people that are trying to enter the workforce.
- Developing new programs to assist the target clients in the workforce.
- Coordinating services offered by the agency to avoid duplicating programs that are offered by other groups in the community.
- Grant writing, reporting and monitoring the use of the services. Making recommendations for future programs or modifications to existing programs.
