Delivery Services - Package Deliverer

A package deliverer for a delivery service is responsible for the safe arrival of the package to the destination within the required delivery time frame or expected delivery time. The package deliverer is usually considered the company representative by most customers so he or she may have to answer questions or even deal with complaints or customer concerns. Excellent communication skills and an ability to not take complaints and concerns personally is an important part of the job.
Most package delivery services require the deliverer to pack and load their own truck. This means that the deliverer must have a good knowledge of the area that they are working and should be able to load the truck in a logical way the makes unloading and delivering easy. Many deliverers may also have to pick-up packages along the way so keeping good records, even with the new electronic scanners and signature terminals is still very important. The organization of the truck makes for speedier deliveries and an increased ability to ensure that all packages are delivered and picked up on time.
Package deliverers must be in good physical shape as they will be required to deliver packages for eight hours a day with overtime in many situations. Package deliverers may have to work in various locations which may include going through security posts, climbing stairs or even having to walk long distances from the road or street to the business or residence. Deliverers often work ten hour days or longer during the Christmas season and other holidays. Most deliverers also have to be able to use trollies or dollies as well as understand the correct way to lift boxes and packages to avoid any type of back injury.
Common work activities include:
- Loading and organizing the delivery truck to begin the route.
- Delivering packages to the correct address within the given time frame.
- Obtaining electronic or paper signatures for packages delivered if required and keeping all records, logs and data entered and up-to-date even while on delivery.
- Answering questions and handling complaints by customers in a positive and informative matter.
- Working overtime and even in poor weather conditions to deliver packages as required.
