Computer Systems - Management Of Information Systems Manager
The management of the information systems is very important both for security reasons and to ensure that all information is provided to the various departments within the company and to outside sources as required. In addition for many companies the information systems manager may also monitor online sales, assist with web page development as well as oversee email responses to customers, live messenger communication with clients, or may provide tech support to other companies using the services of their company.
The information systems manager is often the hands-on troubleshooter for the company, being first to respond to issues regarding technology. This may involve setting up new networks, adding new users to existing networks, or monitoring or developing databases that will be used within the network. Since many companies have remote offices and locations the information system manager may be required to travel to these locations to help with problems or may simply be required to provide online or by phone support for assistance with technical issues.
Many information managers complete in-services to staff regarding new technology. While most of the technology will be computer based there may also be requirements for training staff in phone systems, fax or even specific data entry devices such as those used by sales people or representatives on the road or in remote locations. Excellent understanding of computer and computer systems, networking and ISPs as well as good communication skills and ability to work closely with others is very important for an information systems manager.
Common work activities include:
- Setting up, troubleshooting and monitoring current and new computer networks both internally and in remote locations.
- Providing technical support to systems users either in person, by phone, or through email or messenger systems.
- Training staff on computers and communication technologies used within the company or agency.
- Responding to questions regarding the system and capabilities of the current technology systems in use.
- Making recommendations for new systems or upgrades of current systems that will best meet the customers and companies requirements.
