Newspaper Columnist - Metropolitan Newspaper

Newspaper Columnist - Metropolitan Newspaper

As a columnist in a metropolitan newspaper a writer must be able to generate ideas and new topics on a frequent basis. Most large newspapers will have columnists contribute articles at least twice a week and some may be more frequent. Since most columnists will write on a various theme or area of interest they must constantly be researching new topics and information to write on. If the column is human interest stories the writer must constantly be finding new people, places and events to writer about.

A newspaper columnist spends a good deal of his or her time on the internet researching or reading information from various newspapers from around the world. Research is key for a columnist as it is important to be both factual and entertaining. Some newspaper columnists may also travel to different areas around the world to provide readers with information from different locations. Generally columnists have some previous experience in the topics that they focus on so finding contacts and information may not be that difficult for most subject areas.

Newspaper columnists are generally allowed to write on basically anything pertaining to their column topic. Depending on the newspaper and the agreement between the columnist and the newspaper the editor may have the right to request that the column be revised or even rejected. In these cases the writer then must have a back-up column or be able to revise their original submission as per the editor's comments prior to deadlines for submission. Good communication skills, effective writing and a creative view of life are required for a newspaper columnist for a metropolitan area.

Common work activities include:

  • Developing new ideas and topics within the general area of the column's focus.
  • Researching information based on the topic of the column, ensuring its accuracy and interviewing people if appropriate.
  • Writing, editing and submitting the newspaper column by the deadline.
  • Revising or editing the column if necessary.
  • Attending meeting at the newspaper regarding policy, column topics or other creative or business issues.
