Newspaper Sports Reporter

Newspaper Sports ReporterRequest more information about earning a degree to become a newspaper sports reporter.

A newspaper sports reporter is responsible for writing stories of interest relating to all aspects of sports from the professional level on down to local teams and sporting events. Most newspaper sports reporters start out reporting locally and then more into bigger newspapers and centers until they are able to start covering national or even international sporting events. Sports reporters usually write on a variety of types of sports unless they have significant experience and a reader base, so having a good understanding of the athletes, rules and basic elements of the game or sporting event is important.

Newspaper sports reporters may interview athletes, coaches, referees or even fans to get unique perspectives on the game and issues around the sport. As with any other type of reporting getting a unique story and printing it first is the major objective of the sports reporter. Most reporters work from laptops that provide immediate access to newsrooms, editors and even information from the internet and other databases and sources. Knowing how to use a keyboard and new software programs for word processing is important for a sports reporter.

Having a good working relationship with professionals in the sport is another goal of good sports writers. It is important to be able to contact the coaches and athletes to get their ideas and opinions, as well as getting information on changes to the game or the structure of the team or organization. In addition to just having a working relationship with the professionals and players in the sport the sports reporter also attends games and practices and meets with officials and organizers. Some sports reporters travel with a team whereas others write only on local sporting events.

Common work activities include:

  • Attending sporting events in the community, going to amateur or professional games or sporting events.
  • Researching all the rules of the sport and understanding the various strategies and plays involved in the game.
  • Talking to and interviewing athletes, coaches and officials of all different levels and in different sports.
  • Writing sports stories that are informative, accurate and unique. Getting all the stories in with editing revisions by the deadline.
  • Meeting with editors and other sports reporters for the paper to cover stories or to ensure that both major and minor sporting events are being covered.
  • Networking with others in the field to get ideas and information for new sports stories.
