Employment Services - Recruiter

A recruiter works for an employment agency to attempt to connect people seeking work and employers seeking qualified employees. The job requires excellent communication and personal interaction skills as well as creativity and an ability to work with people with all levels of training, experience and work skills. The recruiter also communicates directly with employers to be able to correctly anticipate the job requirements as well as to provide the correct information to job seekers. Most recruiter will have a basic understanding of the opportunities offered by various companies for advancement in the field, professional development opportunities as general working conditions and hours.

Many recruiters working for large employment services spend at least part of their time traveling to different job and employment fairs in the area. Some recruiters also regularly attend meetings at colleges and with secondary education guidance and career counselors to keep increasing the number of candidates that use the employment services.

Much of the work of a job recruiter is constantly networking and interacting with businesses and individuals. Keyboarding skills, knowledge of databases and operating basic computer programs including spreadsheets is often a valuable asset. Experience in hiring, business administration and management or human resources is also an asset. Some recruiters may work directly with clients to help develop resumes or to prepare for specific types of job interviews. Online communication with clients is often used for employers and employees in remote areas or outside or the regular territory covered by the recruiter.

Common work activities include:

  • Meeting with clients, both businesses and individuals seeking employment and maintaining accurate records to help match the two.
  • Discussing and learning policies of the various employment opportunities to be able to discuss these with potential job candidates.
  • Networking and outreaching to colleges, universities and training center to continually market the services of the employment agency.
  • Maintaining contact with human resource managers and personnel to help clients to match their skills with vacancies on the market.
  • Assisting potential candidates in finding the correct job match for their individual skills.
