Computer Systems - Systems Architect

Computer Systems - Systems Architect

A systems architect for computer systems works to develop the correct project plans for the development of new computer programs or systems. This includes meeting with clients to determine their needs for new software, as well as describing the options that can be provided. The systems architect then works with the engineers to ensure that the program is developed correctly and works with the final product to ensure that there are no flaws or inaccuracies in the program. They may also work on additional features that the client may wish to add to the program after it has been developed.

The systems architect works closely with the management team to assess and evaluate the quality of the software being produced. This software may be marketed to other companies or may be used internally. Regardless of the end product location of use it is an important role of the systems architect to make sure the software is of the highest possible level. This may mean sending software back to the code writers and software engineers to deal with inaccuracies or glitches in the software. Good communication and interpersonal skills are needed for this job as it is important to communicate concerns without questioning the team member's level of competence or professionalism.

The systems architect may help the software engineer with conceptionalizing the project and breaking it down into its basic components. Logical thinking and an understanding of software development are critical for a systems architect. Understanding how software and hardware interact on networks and other systems is also important to design the best possible product. Time management and organizational skills are required to meet deadlines and customer order timelines.

Common work activities include:

  • Developing the concept of the software program with the client and clearly understanding the client's expectations for the software.
  • Working with the software engineers and developers to ensure the final product is what the customer needs.
  • Testing and validating the software is free from inaccuracies and operating problems.
  • Adding features to the software as requested by the clients.
  • Researching and keeping current with software design and systems designs.
  • Ensuring quality control for all software developed by ongoing testing and feedback from clients and customers.
