Technical Writer

A technical writer is responsible for writing any type of document as required by the client. Most technical writers specialize in an area of expertise such as safety standards, computers, vehicle maintenance manuals, or virtually any other type of subject matter. Technical writers are responsible for taking the very difficult to understand technical language and breaking it down into easy to read and understand language for the target user group. Some technical writers are responsible for writing to current professionals in the field so their level of technical writing will be much different than a manual designed for a first time computer user.
Technical writers must have experience working with various computer software programs. This is critical as many different agencies and companies use various machines or programs and need the writing to be compatible with their existing systems. Technical writers may be hired on a contract basis and may work within the various companies or may work on a contract basis from a remote location, simply transferring information and revisions through email or file sharing systems.
Keeping up to date with the latest and most appropriate software choices for publishing or writing technical projects is often challenging for a writer. Researching and verifying information is very important as well, and these two aspects of the job take up over half of the technical writer's daily work schedule. Time management and an ability to work under tight deadlines for work and revisions is an important part of the job. Good communication skills and an understanding of the process of writing is also key.
Common work activities include:
- Meeting with clients to discuss possible projects, finalizing timelines and discussing data and information that is to be included in the writing.
- Researching and verifying information that is to be included in the manual, brochure, ebook or other written material.
- Writing the project within the stipulated timeline and submitting it to the client for feedback.
- Completing all revisions and modifications as required.
- Invoicing and collecting fees for work completed.
- Learning about, working with and utilizing various new and existing software publishing and writing programs.
