A telecommunications technician works to ensure that all telecommunication systems and equipment is set up correctly and is operating as required. Telecommunication equipment includes telephones, fax machines, switches for phones, routers, modems, personal computers and internet hook-ups, broadband, radios, local area networks (LAN) or even networking within larger user groups (WAN). Since these systems are critically important to the operation of most businesses the telecommunications technician play a key role in the troubleshooting and emergency repair of this equipment to keep the company up and running.

Telecommunication technicians maintain and regularly inspect and test the various components of the companies telecommunication system to attempt to discover any possible old or damaged equipment before it fails. If something goes go wrong they immediately respond to fix the problem. Often this means ensuring that there are spare parts available or knowing what company to contact to get spare parts as soon as possible. Being able to problem solve and create temporary solutions to get systems up and running until the correct part comes in is very important in the telecommunications field.

Most telecommunications technicians work for large or small telecommunication companies and are on-call for emergency situations. Some telecommunication technicians may also provide online or phone assistance to help customers try to resolve issues with routers, connections, equipment or other possible problematic issues. These support technicians usually work standard hours in an office setting, whereas the on the road technicians work where ever there is a problem. A good background in electronics, computers, ISPs or networking is considered an asset for this career.

Common work activities include:

  • Maintaining and testing existing telecommunication systems.
  • Installing new telecommunication systems including internet, phones, fax, radios or other communication systems within a facility.
  • Troubleshooting problems or glitches in the system. Being able to creatively work with supplies on hand to at least get minimal use of the system until replacement parts can arrive.
  • Maintaining an inventory of parts needed to replace or repair the system. Knowing where to go to get replacement parts as quickly as possible.
  • Completing all paperwork regarding repairs and maintenance as required.
