Professional Temporary Worker
Professional temporary workers have the responsibility to fill in and complete a variety of professional jobs when the full time workers are on extended sick leaves, maternity or paternity leaves, or on sabbaticals or other leave of absences. Sometimes professional temporary workers or "temps" may be called in if the company suddenly has an increase in business or if large orders or seasonal orders become too large for the existing staff to manage.
As a professional temporary worker there is the added benefit of being able to pick and choose from the jobs that are suitable or acceptable. Most temps will only work for a few days or weeks in one location or department so it is a great way to learn a lot of information about a variety of different jobs within a company or job sector. Being flexible and able to quickly fit in to working with various teams in a variety of work environment is critical for a professional temporary worker. While temps are not required to know everything about the job they are expected to understand the basic concepts, especially if they have some professional experience in the same type of company or agency.
Temporary professional workers usually work for a temporary worker agency but may also be freelance. Working on developing a client base is important for both those temp workers with agencies as well as those that are working on their own. Through working well with various agencies in a temporary placement there is often the opportunity to work into full-time positions when vacancies occur.
Common work activities include:
- Completing information required by placement services and ensuring all contact information is correct and up-to-date.
- Traveling to assigned job locations within the allotted time period.
- Meeting with supervisors to discuss expectations for the temporary position.
- Completing work assigned as requested, clarifying questions or concerns and ensuring that work is of the highest possible quality.
- Entering all paperwork or online data regarding work hours, jobs completed or other required information.
