Utility Bill Auditor
A utility bill auditor works closely with large and small companies to ensure that they are paying the correct rate and amount on their utility and energy bills. Since for most companies the utilities are a large percentage of the overhead paying someone to audit the bills to make sure they are not overpaying for services is well worth the expense. A utility bill auditor must be current on the regulations regarding utility charges as well as the rates charged by various companies in the area. Often utility bill auditors have worked within a government utilities regulation service or have worked for a utilities company.
Utility bill auditors must have a good background in both business and financial matters. He or she should be able to correctly interpret and understand financial statements as well as be able to correctly calculate all issues around electrical rates and billing. Many utility bill auditors also work closely with companies and management teams to try to minimize unnecessary utility use and to write protocols for energy conservation within the company or agency.
Utility bill auditors often work from individual offices with occasional travel to the specific companies that are using their service. Good computer skills, advanced math skills as well as being able to use spreadsheets and database programs are a benefit. Good communication skills and an ability to work closely with others is essential. Those utility bill auditors that own their own companies also have to manage all aspects of the business including obtaining new clients, billing and overseeing the office.
Common work activities include:
- Meeting with clients and obtaining the necessary financial information to prepare the audit.
- Reviewing information from utilities bills and making assessments or noting overpayments or inaccurate billing.
- Communicating with the utilities companies to correct overages or incorrect rate charges.
- Reporting to company finance officers, managers or other individuals regarding the findings of the audit. This is usually done in both written and oral presentation format.
- Working with various company managers to develop an energy savings policy or set of procedures for the company.
