Aerial Photographer

An aerial photographer takes photographs from a plane or helicopter to provide information for landowners, developers, real estate companies, government agencies or other organizations. Often aerial photographers are involved in survey work or planning new roads, bridges or even construction in areas that are remote or not currently accessible by roads. Aerial photographers may be pilots or they may be the professional photographer that works closely with the pilot to get the required photographs.

Aerial photographers must have a good understanding of the type of equipment that they are using including specialty cameras and film such as infrared or high-resolution photography. Some aerial photographers may also use digital equipment or specialized film and processing for panoramic shots and other development styles. In addition to just understanding the equipment the aerial photographer must be comfortable flying in a variety of weather conditions and in monitoring the conditions to get the best possible pictures.

Most aerial photographers develop their own film and video, especially in the non-standard types of photography. Many aerial photographers spend considerable amount of time meeting with prospective clients, interacting with developers and waiting for the right weather conditions to get the photographs completed. Since flying the airplane is very costly it is critical that the shots be completed correctly the first time as re-takes are very difficult to schedule. Aerial photographers that run their own business have to handle marketing, billing, collecting fees, as well as overseeing the day-to-day operation of the company.

Common work activities include:

  • Checking and maintaining camera and flight equipment so that when weather conditions are right everything is in proper working condition.
  • Meeting with clients, getting locations, entering into contracts and setting costs and fees for services.
  • Contracting with a pilot to fly the plane or helicopter if the photographer is not a pilot his or herself.
  • Ensuring high quality photographs are taken on the first attempt.
  • Developing film and specialty photos as requested and required by the client.
  • Completing office management tasks, returning calls, networking, marketing and advertising as well as ensuring photographs are to the customer within the timeline.
