Architect

ArchitectRequest more information about earning a degree to become an architect.

An architect works to create new designs and plans for buildings based on the information provided by the clients. An architect usually will start a project by meeting with the clients or investors to find out what components or spaces they want in the building. After this meeting the architect will then examine the actual building location, or in the case of working with an existing building, he or she will measure, record and even photograph the current construction. The key to a successful architect is good planning and an understanding of what can and cannot be done given the environmental conditions, cost restrictions, and expectations of the clients.

Once the architect has seen the physical space and has met with the client he or she then begins developing proposals based on the information they have gathered. Once the proposal or plans have been designed, usually using a computer assisted drafting program, the architect then reviews the plans with the clients. Many new computer programs actually allow a three dimensional model of the building or space to be created so that the clients can actually see what the end product will look like in a three dimensional way.

The architect then facilitates obtaining building codes, works closely with developers or construction supervisors and the clients to ensure that everything is completed according to plan. The architect may be required to make modifications or to work on changes to the plan as the project develops. Some architects that have their own business will be more involved in the total construction of the project whereas those architects hired by a large firm will usually be less involved in anything other than the initial design.

Common work activities include:

  • Speaking with clients to determine their needs and requirements for the project.
  • Traveling to the various sites to complete physical inspections and site surveys before starting on the design.
  • Working with various computer programs or drafting floor plans and building designs as proposals for the customer.
  • Meeting to review proposals and plans, making modifications or revisions as required.
  • Working with contractors and construction managers to obtain permits, answer questions regarding the plans or troubleshoot problems as they arise
