Computer Aided Design Consultant

Computer aided design consultants may also be known as draftsmen or computer draftsmen. These individuals, be they men or women, work with computer programs to develop computer generated drafting projects for clients. Many clients know exactly what they want but simply don't know how to actually design the project. A computer aided design consultant can take the verbal information from the client and, using a computer assisted drafting program, develop a blueprint to start construction.
A computer aided design consultant usually has experience with a drafting company within the specific type of construction the client is requiring the project on. Most computer aided design consultants will either work with residential or commercial properties but some will provide services for both markets. Generally all that the computer aided design consultant will need is a basic sketch or detailed verbal description and the physical measurements of the project and they can create a draft.
One of the many benefits of using a computer aided design consultant is that the information is one the computer and it is therefore easy to change dimensions, measurements and even add and subtract features instantaneously. Some computer aided design consultants work specifically on one aspect of the building or construction such as the electrical, process control, mechanical, or even the aerospace industry. Many computer aided design projects are developed to see the final cost of the various options for development before starting a given project. Consultants must be logical, analytical, and have a good drafting, science and computer background.
Common work activities include:
- Meeting with clients to discuss the outcomes required by the computer aided design project.
- Analyzing the data to determine various options and designing these options through use of a computer program such as AutoCAD.
- Reviewing the project or projects with the clients, making modifications and making recommendations if required.
- Assisting clients in determining cost effectiveness to the project based on the designs developed.
- Helping clients in understanding the various programs if required.
- Mentoring, teaching or training other staff members as required in the various computer aided drafting programs used in the office.
- Staying current through research and networking to understand new computer aided drafting programs.
