Drafter/Designer of Homes

A drafter or designer of homes has the ability to work with developers, contractors and families to design just the home that they have always wanted. The drafter actually takes the information provided by the client in either verbal information, sketches, pictures or even web pages and compiles the information into a blueprint that shows the contractor how to build the house. In addition the drafter or home designer works with the builder or the client to determine the cost of building the home using various materials, changes in plans, and additions to the original project.
A drafter or home designer must have excellent listening skills as well as an artistic talent to be able to bring the idea to a hard copy blueprint. Most drafters use computer programs such as AutoCAD or other computer assisted drafting software to turn concepts into designs. In addition several new programs on the market allow for a actual three dimensional model of the house to be constructed through the computer program that allows clients to easily understand exactly what the house will look like when finished. Many of the programs even allow the client to pick paint colors and accessorize the various rooms.
Drafters and designers may also be able to help clients and customers in building a house the most effective way. Clients may have unrealistic expectations with regards to the cost of building, unusual floor plans or even details of the house that really are not in keeping with the design of the house. The drafter, through the various programs, can show the clients various choices of floor plans and allow them to pick the one that most closely meets their needs.
Common work activities include:
- Interacting with clients to determine what options and lay-outs they would like in their home, office or business.
- Working with various sketches, pictures and information to develop models, blueprints and floor plans of the house or building.
- Researching and reviewing the plans with clients, making modifications as required.
- Finalizing plans with the clients.
- Making suggestions for cost-saving options, helping clients determine the actual cost of the project, making recommendations for materials and supplies.
- Invoicing, handling accounts receivable and marketing drafting services to the appropriate businesses such as building contractors.
