Geographic Information Systems Technician

Geographic Information Systems TechnicianRequest more information about earning a degree to become a Geographic Information Systems technician.

Converting information on maps, surveys and various other tools used by various professionals into data sources and information systems is the responsibility of a geographic information systems technician. Since much of the work done by the geographic information systems tech is both computer and geographically based it is important for a good understanding of both aspects of the career. Reading topographical maps, interpreting various data sources including geological surveys, satellite images and even infrared photographs is all part of the job.

Technicians take the visual information provided by the above-mentioned sources and convert it to data streams that can be used in various computer programs. Once the visual information has been converted to a database it is easy for geological engineers, contractors, builders and developers to manipulate and manage the data to work on various proposals and options. Without the correct interpretation and conversion of the data the proposals will be inaccurate and the project will likely not proceed as per the plan. Attention to detail is critical for a geographic information systems technician.

In addition to converting data the technician may be required to develop databases, provide specialized application programs for the data or even developing analysis tools or query systems for clients to use. Understanding the various ways that the client may need to use the data involves being a good listener plus having an understanding of what the data is appropriate for. Most geological information systems technicians will have formal training in computer systems, data management and computer aided drafting tools.

Common work activities include:

  • Determining the most appropriate types of documents to obtain the data necessary to create the systems required by the clients.
  • Researching, finding, analyzing and using the various types of data sources from maps to geological surveys.
  • Entering data into various programs including macro programs, databases, automatic query programs or even spreadsheets for the client.
  • Assisting the client in understanding the correct use of the programs developed.
  • Revising programs based on clients needs.
  • Keeping up to date on various computer programs and systems used in geographic systems by attending classes, workshops and trainings.
