Hydrogeologist Consultant

A hydrogeologist consultant is a specialized geologists that focusses on the development of groundwater resources or the recovery of contaminiated groundwater reservoirs and sites. Since water is a natural resource that is required for all living things having appropriate groundwater resources that are clean and contaminant free is critical to sustainable life. A hydrogeologist works to determine groundwater resources based on their knowledge of geology as well as their understanding of groundwater reservoirs through seismic and other forms of testing.

Hydrogeologists work in the field with oil companies, developers, construction companies and government agencies. Before construction can begin a survey must be completed to ensure that natural resources are being protected, including groundwater. If the hydrogeologist reports that there are groundwater reservoirs present he or she may work in consultation with developers to maintain the safety of the groundwater supply. They may also work on developing new technology to find, locate and sample groundwater even at deep levels. A hydrogeologist usually works as part of a team including developers, owners, regulatory officials, geological engineers, landscapers and others involved in the development of the project. Good communication skills and an ability to work in a team are essential.

Some hydrogeologists work specifically with reclaiming contaminated groundwater sites. This may included completing tests for contamination, monitoring site clean-up, and even proposing methods to facilitate the clean-up of existing groundwater supplies. Most hydrogeologists will have a Master's level training in geology or related science field as well as working with various computer programs, laboratory procedures, and testing equipment.

Common work activities include:

  • Traveling to various development or construction sites as required by the client or contractor.
  • Obtaining groundwater samples through drilling, testing the samples through a laboratory or on-site testing.
  • Interpreting and identifying results of the testing.
  • Researching various databases and sources to determine any possible contaminants based on testing results.
  • Preparing reports both in oral and written form regarding the results of the testing.
  • Overseeing and planning the clean-up of contaminated or potentially contaminated groundwater reservoirs.
