Landscaping Contractor

Landscaping Contractor

A landscaping contractor works closely with the client to design, develop, plant or maintain a given landscaped area. Some landscape contractors work with residential clients in designing yards, gardens and beautiful natural areas on residential land whereas others work with parks, businesses or even governments to maintain current grassed areas or to landscape and develop new or existing areas. Most landscaping contractors offer services ranging from designing a garden or yard right through to maintenance of the area year round. Clients may choose to use all or some of the services based on their level of need and their desire to work within their own garden or just enjoy the beauty.

The landscaping contractor usually starts a project by meeting with the client. At this time they discuss the type of garden or green area the client wants including sharing ideas for trees, flowers or even types of grass that would be best suited for the area. Most landscape contractors will have computer-generated models, pictures or landscape blueprints for customers to examine. One of the most important aspects of the first meeting is to help the customers understand what plants are or are not appropriate for the growing area. Sometimes customers have unrealistic desires for specific plants that simply will not grow in the area, so the contractor must work to explain these issues. After the final plans are developed the landscaping contractor then coordinates the purchase or the plants or sod as well as oversees the work.

Landscaping contractors that own their own business must also focus on advertising and increasing their customer base. Since word of mouth advertising is very important providing quality service to every customer is a must. The landscaping contractor will answer questions, keep the project on timeline or notify clients of any changes. He or she will also hire, train and supervise staff and even contract with nurseries or landscaping supply companies.

Common work activities include:

  • Meeting with clients to determine the types of plants, style of garden or requirements for the area.
  • Consulting with clients about options for plants , types of grass or even shrubs and trees that will flourish in the growing area.
  • Marketing the service of the landscaping company including overseeing advertising.
  • Invoicing clients and collecting fees for landscaping jobs or ongoing area maintenance including garden maintenance and lawn mowing.
  • Hiring, supervising, training and firing of staff. Often this may include lay-offs over winter months in some climates and areas.
  • Contracting with various suppliers and outside vendors to ensure the project goes smoothly and stays on schedule.
