Mechanical Engineer Product Development
A mechanical engineer focusing on product development works to design and build new products for customers. Usually the process begins with the customer approaching the mechanical engineer and requesting a bid to design a product that the client has in mind. The mechanical engineer may make a bid or offer based on general information that the client provides. Once a satisfactory price as well as a timeline is established the mechanical engineer then actually begins to design the machine, system or product. Usually the designs are not straight forward and require a good understanding of both mechanical design and science. The mechanical engineer usually uses a variety of computer aided drafting programs, spreadsheets and cost analysis data to determine the best possible design based on the budget guidelines.
Mechanical engineers that are involved in product development must constant keep in touch with advancements in the field both in materials available, design trends as well as the various computer programs available. As with most engineering jobs a mechanical engineer will at least a Bachelors level education in mechanical engineering as well as many will also be professional engineers, or have a P. E.. Mechanical engineers are often self-employed or may work for larger manufacturing and development companies, or may also work on research and development projects.
Those mechanical engineers that run their own product development companies also have to deal with the day-to-day operation of the company. This includes hiring and training staff, possibly mentoring new engineers in the field, marketing their services and working directly with customers and clients. Good communication and businesses skills are required in addition to the skills needed in mechanical engineering for those engineers that have their own businesses.
Common work activities include:
- Discussing projects with clients, gathering specifics, placing bids and offers to work on specific projects.
- Designing and drafting projects based on customer specifications.
- Researching and working on creating new and unique solutions to mechanical design problems that arise on projects.
- Completing cost analysis and cost projections for clients.
- Invoicing, billing and collecting fees from clients based on contracts.
- Advertising and marketing services to new and existing customers and clients.
- Hiring, training and supervising of staff in both the office and the engineering aspect of the company.
