Pavement Striper

A pavement striper has the job of marking out the various traffic lanes, setting parking bumpers in parking lots, marking parking spaces in parking lots and adding signs to various traffic and parking areas. This job requires an ability to work under timelines and with a great deal of accuracy and precision. In addition a pavement striper must be able to understand verbal and written directions, especially with regards to the design or layout of a given parking area or traffic flow pattern.

Pavement stripers usually work for companies or are independent operators. Generally the equipment used is a pressurized paint system, mobile trailer, and a heavy-duty truck for hauling and storage of paint containers. A general drivers license is all that is required for most jobs. For those pavement stripers that own their own company and equipment they must be able to accurately bid on contracts and projects and still be competitive while covering all costs and making wages. This is often difficult as there are many variables in the bidding process including mileage, materials required, hours needed to complete the project as well as the timeline the client wants.

Pavement stripers usually require no formal education although business management and bookkeeping skills are an asset. An ability to work with computers for billing and writing bids as well as for record keeping is an asset. Most pavement markers start out working for an existing company until they gain practical experience on the job before branching out with their own company. Marketing and advertising skills as well as developing a network of clients and referral resources is an important part of attracting new clients.

Common work activities include:

  • Looking for new construction and paving jobs that may be potential customers for pavement striping companies.
  • Meeting with potential customers, determining cost of completing the job and bidding contracts based on this information.
  • Entering into contracts with clients for completing of pavement marking or sign installing on the property.
  • Designing or following pre-existing plans for pavement marking in the area.
  • Hiring, training and supervising new personnel and employees.
  • Ordering equipment, supplies and required items to ensure the job is done on time.
