High School - History Teacher/Basketball Coach

A high school history teacher helps his or her students delve further into the history introduced in elementary and middle school, exposing them to more world information. They work effectively with a diverse student population because of the varied racial, religious and ethnic backgrounds and understand the different cultures. A history teacher plans and assigns lessons, evaluates each student's progress and prepares and grades exams. They meet with other teachers, school staff and the student's parents to discuss problems or academic progress.

In addition to primarily teaching history and conducting classroom activities, some supplement their income by working as the schools basketball coach part-time. They organize their basketball athletes and instruct them in the fundamentals of team sports. The basketball coach holds practice sessions, where the athletes perform drills that help improve their skills, stamina and techniques. Part of being a great coach is instilling teamwork, a competitive spirit and good sportsmanship and working with their teams during competitions as well as practice sessions. Before a competition, the basketball coach helps determine the specific plays and game strategies necessary to help their team win. Basketball coaches are involved in taking inventory of equipment, supplies and materials, issuing uniforms and storing the sports equipment.

Employment analysts expect the employment outlook for coaches and teachers to increase over the next several years. Baby-boomers approaching retirement and more students realizing the importance of education and sports helps drive the job growth rate up. The employment of coaches also increases with the expansion of high school athletic programs.
