High School - Language Teacher
A high school language teacher instructs and teaches a foreign language or languages to his or her students at a secondary school level. They are responsible for maintaining order and enforcing rules for acceptable behavior among their students while instructing them through lectures, demonstrations and discussions. A language teacher has many duties such as preparing assignments, evaluating a student's progress and behavior while enforcing all rules and administration policies governing students.
Along with teaching their students a foreign language, they often work on committees with other teachers and staff members. A language teacher needs an effective teaching method to motivate and keep their students interested in learning another language, along with good organizational, administrative and conflict solving skills. They give homework assignments, plan the class lessons, correct exam papers and often work as advisors of student organizations. It can be extremely stressful because teachers deal with some teenage students that have problems such as emotional, drugs and behavioral problems but the rewards are great when they are influential in helping students turn themselves around into honest, hardworking, good students. Teaching is a skill that requires good coping skills, such as successfully working with others and handling student/teacher/parent interactions.
A high school language teacher, along with any teacher, requires solid, strong qualities such as organizational skills, honesty, consistency and fairness, effect work habits, works well under pressure, a good sense of humor and patience. They should provide an environment that makes their students want to continue to learn and succeed.
Common work activities include:
- Planning yearly, weekly and daily lesson plans and objectives.
- Using various types of learning experiences to help students learn another language.
- Connecting with other foreign language speakers in the community and having them help with understanding the culture of various parts of the world.
- Attending trainings and professional development activities to constantly improve teaching skills and strategies.
- Monitoring of student progress through the use of homework assignments, projects, examinations and other methods.
- Recording and accurately reporting student progress through report cards and interactions with students and parents.
