Chemist Consultant/Teacher

Chemist consultants or teachers work as experts in some area or aspect of chemistry and they develop programs or teaching seminars to help others gain experience and knowledge. A chemist consultant may also be called by a company or agency that is experiencing difficulty in correcting a specific problem or finding the right solution to a production issue involving a chemical process. Manufacturing companies, pharmaceuticals, beauty product manufacturers, food companies and almost any other type of production industry may need assistance from a chemist consultant at some time.
Chemistry consultants may also provide specialized training to groups of professionals or students on a particular subject area. Since most chemist consultants focus on one specific area of chemistry they are usually considered experts in this area. Companies may find it more beneficial in the long run to train their own employees rather than using independent consultants. The chemist consultant then enters the teaching role and designs training sessions that will give participants the information they need to be effective at their job.
Public speaking skills, writing skills and a thorough knowledge of the subject matter are critical for a chemist consultant or teacher. Since most of the work will be directly with other people, not just in labs or in isolation good communication skills are a must. Writing skills are important especially if the chemist consultant wishes to be published or to work towards becoming published. Networking, marketing and advertising services is necessary for a consultant on an ongoing basis.
Common work activities include:
- Meeting with clients to discuss their training needs or requirements for consultant.
- Researching, investigating and determining the problems that the company is experience and making written and oral presentations to production teams, managers and owners to correct the problems.
- Designing specific curriculum for presentations to professional groups in the teaching role.
- Obtaining feedback from participants, modifying curricula or training programs and supplying additional information as required.
- Billing, entering into contracts and providing required services to clients, collecting fees, handling accounts payable and receivable.
- Advertising, marketing and promoting the consulting or teaching aspects based on networking and constant interactions with professionals in the field.
