Elementary School - First Grade Teacher

Being a first grade teacher in an elementary school requires an assortment of aptitudes and skills, including the skill and ability to work with children, creating an effective and pleasant classroom, learning environment. They are responsible for teaching a first grade curriculum to their students. A teacher needs exceptional organizational, record keeping, research, administrative, conflict resolving, communication and problem solving powers. Motivating, training and influencing first grade students require a lot of creativity, understanding and patience on the teacher's part.
First grade teachers act as facilitators, using hands on learning and interactive discussion groups, to help their students learn subjects and apply the concepts in math, science, English and other subjects. The teacher plays a very vital and important role in encouraging and improving their student's development. By making each individual student feel worthwhile and good about him or herself and giving them a positive learning experience helps to shape their future education. This often affects the student's view of the world and themselves and greatly affects their success or failure in later years.
The overall employment outlook for elementary school teachers, including first grade teachers looks very promising and they expect this to increase quickly over the next few years. Because many of the rural areas and inner cities have a problem attracting enough elementary school teachers, the job prospects in these areas are very good. To be a great first grade teacher requires a lot of patience, good communication skills, being good at problem solving and the ability to motivate children so they want to learn.
Common work activities include:
- Reading, understanding and reviewing the various curricula and required learning outcomes for first grade.
- Working with other first grade teachers to ensure that all students at this level are taught the same information based on learning objectives.
- Developing themes, lesson plans and ideas for teaching both concrete and abstract skills and skill sets.
- Teaching, supporting, motivating and encouraging students in all aspects of school activities.
- Assisting students in educational as well as social and behavioral growth by giving them numerous and varied learning opportunities.
- Meeting with parents, staff and other professionals that work with the children to provide complete plans for all children in the classroom.
