Elementary School - Third Grade Teacher

An elementary school third grade teacher teaches multiple subjects such as mathematics, social studies, science, reading and other third grade curriculum. They require patience and the necessary ability and skills to teach children in a pleasant, creative and constructive manner, so it makes their students want to continue learn. A good teacher has a positive impact on his or her students and plays an important role, which affects the student's self-esteem and development.

Many teachers work with students from diverse racial, ethnic and religious backgrounds, so often require understanding and awareness of many different cultures. A third grade teacher works with his or her students individually, providing additional assistance in specific areas, when they require it and also plan and assign lessons, prepare and grade tests, maintain discipline in the classroom and listen to oral presentations. Many third grade teachers supervise students extracurricular activities take them on field trips and supervise at recess time. They participate in educational workshops and education conferences. Teachers meet with their student's parent or guardian to discuss the child's progress, offer advice, and help when needed.

One of the rewards of teaching is watching students develop skills and gain knowledge. Some aptitudes and skills third grade teachers require include the power to motivate, train and influence children, creativity, patience, good communication skills, record keeping abilities, work well under pressure and boundless energy. The job outlook for elementary school teachers over the next six years varies from good to excellent, depending on the grade level and locality.

Common work activities include:

  • Daily lesson plan development for all subject areas as required and taught.
  • Working collaboratively with other third grade teachers to coordinate curriculum, team teaching or even have classrooms participate together in activities.
  • Teach, assess, evaluate and grade students based on their in class work, homework assignments, exams and their attitudes and behaviors.
  • Keep accurate records of student progress using grade books, various grading software programs or other record keeping systems as required by the school administration.
  • Interacting with students on a daily basis to motivate, inspire and connect with all students in the classroom.
  • Providing modified or adapted learning situations for students that have special needs.
  • Reporting to parents and attending parent meetings and information sessions.
  • Participating on various committees and groups within the school and community as required.
