A science and technology transfer consultant works with people, schools, organizations and companies to help them understand how to use technology to their advantage to improve efficient within their work and lifestyles. Often in workplaces there are simply technologies that are being used ineffectively or completely inaccurately which end up costing the user both time and money. A science and technology consultant comes in and examines the current use of technology within the organization and then develops trainings and information packages to help users operate the technology the way it was intended.
A science and technology transfer consultant must be current on all new technologies as well as older technologies that still may be being used in schools, offices and companies. In addition to this knowledge he or she must be able to work with others in a positive and supportive role to help them learn the new use without feeling corrected or like they have been unprofessional. Good listening skills as well as diplomacy and an ability to interact with others in a teaching and support role is very important. An ability to work with people with all different comfort levels with science and technology is a must.
Science and technology transfer consultants often are required to speak publicly to small or large groups in workshops or seminars. They may also be required to work with specific employees or groups of employees on a more practical training arrangement. Flexibility, a willingness to travel and good self-marketing skills are very important in this line of work.
Common work activities include:
- Marketing, advertising and discussing services provided with schools, companies, organizations and business managers and service providers.
- Developing specific training programs or modifying existing trainings to reflect the technology that is being used.
- Working one-on-one with some employees, using small or large group training or lesson type trainings with others.
- Evaluating the effectiveness of training, making modifications, answering questions and providing feedback to clients regarding the effectiveness of the training.
- Encouraging, motivating and supporting people that are learning to use technology or re-learning how to use specific science or technology items.
